Running Alpha

Catalyst for change at Harvard

by John Frahm, National Coordinator, Alpha on Campus
At the conclusion of each school term I receive reports from some of the people who have run the Alpha Course and I have included the one below from Peter Dyrud, who with his wife Felisa ran the course for students at the Kennedy School at Harvard. This not only celebrates a student who gave her life to Christ but also exemplifies how one person can be a ‘catalyst for change.’ I pray that Peter’s report will be a blessing to you.

"Dear John,

As a master’s student at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, it has been a great privilege to partner with Alpha to reach the campus for Christ. My wife Felisa and I started a house church in our home last year and had planned to keep the same framework this year but, for a variety of reasons, felt led in a different direction. The Alpha Course has proven to be an ideal format for ministry here. It is welcoming for students who appreciate good food and friendships, thought-provoking yet not offensive, and not overly time-consuming for the leadership and guests.

We praise God for the work he is doing. When we recently examined the Parable of the Sower, a Chinese international student who is seeking was troubled by the fact that the seed that fell on good soil produced a crop a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown. While I initially thought he didn’t understand what the multiplication symbolized, it turned out that his confusion was more personal: “How can I be the one that produces a hundred?” And a Japanese student who was invited to the Alpha Course by one of our guests recently accepted Christ and was baptized!

Work is being done not only among seekers but also within the leadership team. We are growing closer as brothers and sisters in Christ, supporting each other when the pressures of life threaten our joy, and seeing real results which renew our hope that God is moving powerfully in Boston. It is clear that the Alpha Course does not have to be the initiative of a pastor or national ministry...anyone who has a relationship with Christ, a strong Biblical foundation, and a humble heart can be a catalyst for change!

Blessings,
Peter"
