running Alpha
Alpha is a parish-based, relationship model of evangelization. People come to Alpha because their friends and relatives invite them. They in turn invite their friends and relatives. When people come to Alpha, they find themselves among people who are the local Church. It is the local parish community, meeting guests wherever they are on their life and faith journey. It is the parish family accepting attending guests in a non-threatening and non-judgmental approach. Alpha communicates the Gospel and shows others that Catholics are normal, friendly people.
Alpha works through relationships
Alpha was created specifically for people outside the Church and those who are on the fringes of faith. But when the first Alpha course is held in a parish, it is usually filled with regular parishioners. When they find themselves renewed in their faith, they invite their friends, neighbors and co-workers to attend the course. Alpha gives ordinary parishioners a chance to tell those around them about their faith in a new and comfortable way.
Alpha evenings start with a meal
The meal can be as simple as bread and soup, yet it is a vital part of the evening because it breaks the ice and brings people together.
Alpha talks appeal to the mind and heart
After sharing a meal, a talk on DVD covering one aspect of the Christian faith is presented. The talks are persuasive and appeal to the mind and heart. The topics are presented in a logical, non-threatening and non-judgmental way. Small group facilitators encourage a free flowing discussion after the talk. Guests have the opportunity to ask any question and offer their honest opinions. Together in this small group environment the claims of Christ are investigated against the backdrop of people’s lives and culture.
Alpha includes a weekend away
There is a one or two-day retreat, during which participants experience the person and work of the Holy Spirit.
